Proper storage keeps your materials fresh and contamination-free until you’re ready to use them.
Grain spawn should be stored in a cool, dark place around 60–70°F if unused. Never freeze it—the expansion of moisture can crack seals and destroy structure. If already inoculated, keep at incubation temperature and away from direct light.
Substrate, whether pasteurized or pre-made, should stay sealed and dry. For longer storage, refrigerate pasteurized substrate to slow microbial growth. Label every bag with the preparation date and contents for tracking.
If condensation forms, wipe the outer bag but avoid opening it. A faint earthy smell is normal—sour or sweet odors indicate contamination.
Clean storage is part of clean growing. Keep your materials off the floor, away from direct heat, and check regularly for leaks or mold. The better you care for your prep, the smoother your grow will run later.
FAQs
- How long does substrate last? Around 2–3 months if sealed and dry.
- Can I reuse old substrate? Not recommended—nutrients deplete and contamination risk rises.
