How to Inoculate Safely

Sterility is the foundation of all successful mushroom cultivation. Every time you introduce culture to a new substrate, you open the door to contamination if precautions aren’t followed.

Start by cleaning your workspace with isopropyl alcohol or diluted bleach. Turn off fans and air conditioners to limit airborne particles. Use sterile gloves, and if possible, a still-air box or laminar flow hood for maximum protection.

Before injecting, flame-sterilize your syringe needle until red hot and allow it to cool briefly. Wipe the injection port with alcohol and insert the needle carefully without excessive movement. After inoculation, seal the port and gently shake the bag to distribute culture evenly.

Avoid breathing directly over your materials, and always sterilize tools between uses. Label each bag with the strain and date so you can track progress.

Clean technique doesn’t just prevent contamination—it improves yield and consistency. Many cultivators find their results improve dramatically once they standardize their inoculation routine.
