So you’ve decided to grow your own mushrooms. Great decision. Whether you’re doing it for the fun of it, for eating, or perhaps even for a little side income, mushroom growing can be incredibly rewarding.

But first, there’s one thing you need to get absolutely right: your mushroom cultivation supplies.

Having the right supplies makes all the difference. It’s the difference between a successful batch of tasty mushrooms and a grimy, mold-covered disaster that heads straight to the dumpster.

Here in this blog, we will guide you through a complete checklist of everything you need, what to purchase, why you need it, and how to get yourself ready for success. So let’s get growing!

Why the Right Supplies Matter

You won’t build a house without the proper tools, right? Same principle with mushrooms.

Mushrooms are living things. They require special conditions, such as the proper substrate, moisture, airflow, and cleanliness, to develop strong and healthy. Quality mushroom growing supplies assist you in controlling those conditions without any hassle.

Shelling out for quality materials early can save you from lost time, lost money, and lots of frustration later.

The Ultimate Mushroom Growing Checklist

1. Mushroom Spawn

This is the “seed” of the mushroom kingdom. Spawn is made up of mycelium, that root-like growth which will eventually yield mushrooms.

You can obtain spawn in various forms, such as grain spawn, sawdust spawn, or plugs, depending on the arrangement and type of mushroom you are cultivating. Select a spawn from a reputable supplier, and ensure that it’s fresh and appropriate for the species you are after.

Beginner favorites:

  • Oyster
  • Shiitake
  • Lion’s Mane

If you don’t want to get ready to use spawn, you can grow your own! All you need is clean sterile grain and genetic material (spores or liquid culture). We have a list of Recommended Vendors for your genetic materials. Once you have both of those, you inject your grain with the syringe you’ve purchased, let it colonize, and now you have your grain spawn!

2. Substrate

This is where your mushrooms make their home. It’s their food and home in one.

Various mushrooms prefer different substrates:

  • Straw – Iridescent oyster mushrooms
  • Hardwood sawdust – Ideal for shiitake or lion’s mane
  • Manure or compost – For manure loving mushrooms

Ensure the substrate is well  sterilized to avoid contamination.

3. Growing Containers or Bags

You require something to contain your spawn and substrate. Enter jars, trays, or mushroom grow bags.

Grow bags are the best choice for beginners as well as long-time growers. They’re compact, hygienic, and easy to handle. Most also include filter patches for airflow, which means gas exchange is effortless without the risk of contaminants entering.

4. Cleaning Spray and Gloves

Germ-free environment is key when it comes to mushroom cultivation. A single germ can spoil an entire batch.

It’s best to use an ammonia or bleach based cleaner to avoid bacteria or mold spores effecting your projects. You can find these cleaners in the cleaning aisle at a local store.

5. Water Spray Bottle or Humidifier

Mushrooms love moisture. If the air is too dry, they cannot develop well.

Use any kind of spray bottle you might have for smaller grows. Give the inside of your bag or fruiting chamber a good misting regularly if you don’t see condensation inside once you’re gruiting. Bigger-scale growing will do better with a humidifier.

But what are the ideal humidity levels? Around 85–95%. Different mushrooms prefer different levels of humidity, so make sure you check before you start fruiting!

6. Thermometer and Hygrometer

Monitor your mushroom growth temperature and humidity. Having an ideal temperature range is very important for mushrooms.

Mushrooms can prefer a wide range of temperatures so it’s important to check what the species you’re growing perfers before you start. Most mushrooms do well around 72-75 degrees, but some will not fruit unless they are cooler, some warmer.

7. Fruiting Chamber (Optional)

If you want to go bulk or step it up a notch, go for the fruiting chamber. It can be a modified plastic tub, a greenhouse shelf with a humidity tent, or an actual grow tent.

The goal? A humid, well-ventilated area where your mushrooms can fruit and thrive.

If you’re growing with an all-in-one bag, you don’t have to worry about this part! Just keep your bag somewhere dark and you’re all set!

8. Clean Blade or Scissors

You will use this to cut open your bags to harvest your mushrooms. Ripping mushrooms out of your substrate can cause damage to the mycelium, so it’s best to either grab by the base and twist when harvesting, or cut as low on the mushroom’s stem with a clean blade or scissors.

Sterilize and keep your blade clean. If harvesting by hand, use gloves!

9. Patience

Alright, not a tangible supply, but still the most critical one. Cultivating mushrooms isn’t immediate. You’ll have to wait a few weeks just for colonization before you even get your first pin. But trust the process. It’ll be worth it.

Bonus: Pre-Made Kits for Beginners

If this checklist seems intimidating, you’re not alone. The fortunate thing is that mushroom-growing supplies are now prepackaged and ready to use.

The average mushroom grow kit usually contains substrate, a container (or bag), and easy-to-understand instructions. Perfect if you want to try it without delving too deep into the whole DIY thing.
